FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHO DO YOU SERVE?
We serve homeless and distressed U.S. military veterans of all branches, no matter when they served.
HOW MANY VETERANS HAVE YOU HELPED?
Since our humble beginnings in 1987, almost 14,000 veterans have graduated from our program. The vast majority of them have successfully reintegrated back into society and lead fulfilling lives. Unfortunately, for every veteran in or successfully graduated from our program, there are many more who are still homeless and can't get into our program. We are constantly driven to help them, looking for ways to expand our capacity so we can help more veterans.
HOW MANY VETERANS CAN YOU HELP?
We currently have 122 beds spread out through our six facilities. All of them are always full and we have a waiting list. For those veterans who want help and are still homeless, our Drop-In Center located at 1183 Madison enables them to receive our services even while homeless.
Each facility serves a slightly different segment of our veterans. Some facilities are transitional, some permanent. Some facilities provide support, some are more are independent. If a veteran is accepted into our program, the facility they go to is according to their needs.
WHAT KINDS OF HOUSING DO YOU PROVIDE?
We currently have four types of housing.
Transitional - This is short-term housing, generally 30-90 days and is designed for those veterans who are just getting off the street. The veterans in this housing receive the most intense services to help them receive the services and supports they need, while they develop and reach toward their goals.
Supportive - Supportive housing is permanent housing with staff available to help the veteran remain stable and perform those daily tasks or normal life. The staff also helps the veteran acquires the tools and skills to help them move forward in their lives and achieve their goals.
Permanent - This is independent housing, the veterans receive no supports unless they ask for them. A veteran can stay in permanent housing as long as they desire. We have different living arrangements such as congregate housing (they live as roommates, one veteran per bedroom in a house/townhouse) as well as studio and one bedroom apartments.
IS ALPHA OMEGA VETERANS SERVICES RELIGIOUS?
No. While we recognize the grace and blessings of a Higher Power through our twelve step programs, we use the term "Alpha Omega" to mean "from the beginning to the end," which is how we treat our veterans. We provide the support and services veterans want and need for as long as they need it.
WHAT HAPPENS TO THE VETERAN WHEN THEY GRADUATE?
When a veteran graduates from our program, they are free to do as they please. The majority of them rejoin society and go on to have rich and fulfilling lives as contributing members of society.
Most of the people who work at Alpha Omega Veterans Services are graduates of our program. Some continue to live in our permanent housing, others move on to new lives elsewhere.
They come to us as caterpillars. We help them become butterflies, spread their wings and fly away.
